San Francisco’s District 7 Celebrates National Summer Learning Week
Every year, summer programs all around the country participate in National Summer Learning Week, hosting events that celebrate and elevate the importance of summer programs for children, youth, and working families.
In San Francisco, non-profit, community-based organizations (CBOs) are one of the primary providers of summer programming for thousands of the City’s children and youth. These programs prevent the learning loss that can happen during the months that school is out, and they are a vital support for San Francisco’s working families, who can rely on these programs to keep their children engaged in learning, safe, and having fun throughout the summer. In 2024, every CBO that is funded by the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth, and their Families (DCYF) to provide comprehensive, all-day summer programs for children and youth in grades K-8 hosted events to celebrate Summer Learning Week.
San Francisco’s District 7, which includes the Ingleside, West Portal, and Lakeside neighborhoods, hosted three Summer Learning Week events. Read on to find out how summer learning was celebrated in this part of San Francisco!
Bay Area Community Resources (BACR)
BACR hosted a spirit week for Summer Learning Week (we heard wild hair day was epic!), and on the final day they headed out to Junipero Serra Playground for tennis, kickball, jump rope, dodgeball, basketball, and bubble play.
Community Youth Center (CYC) — Aptos Middle School and Dianne Feinstein Elementary School Beacons
CYC’s elementary and middle school summer programs collaborated on one big Summer Learning Week fitness day event! Over 170 students headed to CYC’s Aptos campus for a day of fun, as they participated in games, team building activities, and got to know other CYC youth in different programs. Middle and high school interns from CYC planned and operated the fitness stations, which included parachute games, kickball, relay races, and more!
YMCA of San Francisco
The YMCA of San Francisco brought together summer campers from every branch to the SF County Fair Building for their 9th annual Thingamajig Invention Convention. Thingamajig offers more than a dozen hands-on challenges designed to spark curiosity and showcase kids’ S.T.E.A.M. skills. It’s one part science demos and activities, another part engineering competition, and 100% fun!
