San Francisco’s District 6 Celebrates National Summer Learning Week

Every year, summer programs all around the country participate in National Summer Learning Week, hosting events that celebrate and elevate the importance of summer programs for children, youth, and working families.

In San Francisco, non-profit, community-based organizations (CBOs) are one of the primary providers of summer programming for thousands of the City’s children and youth. These programs prevent the learning loss that can happen during the months that school is out, and they are a vital support for San Francisco’s working families, who can rely on these programs to keep their children engaged in learning, safe, and having fun throughout the summer. In 2024, every CBO that is funded by the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth, and their Families (DCYF) to provide comprehensive, all-day summer programs for children and youth in grades K-8 hosted events to celebrate Summer Learning Week.

San Francisco’s District 6, which includes the South of Market neighbohood, Civic Center neighborhood, and Treasure Island, hosted four Summer Learning Week events. Read on to find out how summer learning was celebrated in this part of San Francisco!

Filipino American Development Foundation

Students from the Filipino American Development Foundation’s FEC Galing Bata Program celebrated Summer Learning Week at Sentro Filipino. The students started off with a tour and a short presentation on the history of Sentro Filipino, then participated in a self-defense workshop and a martial arts workshop hosted by Legacy Filipino Martial Arts. Students also participated in a Q&A session with a Filipino martial arts master, and an arts activity based on the “Hinabi” (Filipino weaving) designs displayed in Sentro Filipino.

Mission Graduates — Bessie Carmichael School PreK-8 Filipino Education Center Beacon

Students at Mission Graduates’ Bessie Carmichael Beacon summer program went deep with the big National Summer Learning Week themes: Literacy & Learning, Arts, and STEM/STEAM . Students worked together all summer on projects in these areas, and (bravely!) gave presentations on what they’ve been working on during their Summer Learning Week event.

Treasure Island YMCA

The Treasure Island YMCA teamed up with iSprowt to inspire their campers’ sense of wonder, exploration, and inquiry by hosting fun STEAM activites. After the science came the fun outside, with activities and games hosted by the YMCA staff.

United Playaz & West Bay Pilipino Multi Service Center

United Playaz and the West Bay Pilipino Multi Service Center celebrated Summer Learning Week by announcing the DayDay College Scholarship Fund recipients. The DayDay College Scholarship Fund was created to support extraordinary high school seniors and current college students who overcame adversity to attend college, embody the mission and vision of United Playaz and West Bay, and are facing financial hardship in achieving their college dreams. The Scholarship Fund was named in honor of Day’von “DayDay” Hann, a United Playaz student, who had high hopes and dreams of attending college. DayDay fell victim to gun violence, and was tragically killed on July 8th, 2019. DayDay would have been a part of the high school graduating class of 2022. Students from United Playaz and West Bay’s K-8 programs attend the event every year, inspiring them to continue to work hard and reach their dreams.
