San Francisco’s District 2 Celebrates National Summer Learning Week

Every year, summer programs all around the country participate in National Summer Learning Week, hosting events that celebrate and elevate the importance of summer programs for children, youth, and working families.

In San Francisco, non-profit, community-based organizations (CBOs) are one of the primary providers of summer programming for thousands of the City’s children and youth. These programs prevent the learning loss that can happen during the months that school is out, and they are a vital support for San Francisco’s working families, who can rely on these programs to keep their children engaged in learning, safe, and having fun throughout the summer. In 2024, every CBO that is funded by the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth, and their Families (DCYF) to provide comprehensive, all-day summer programs for children and youth in grades K-8 hosted events to celebrate Summer Learning Week.

San Francisco’s District 2, which includes the Marina, Presidio, and Russian Hill neighborhoods, and parts of the Richmond District, hosted six Summer Learning Week events. Read on to find out how summer learning was celebrated in this part of San Francisco!

Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) — Sherman Elementary Beacon

Science was the star during Summer Learning Week at BACR’s Beacon program at Sherman Elementary School. Students participated in four different stations: rocket making, Oreo cookie moon phases, DIY slime, and a DIY marble run. At the end of the day the students got their physics on, creating contraptions to keep an egg safe that the BACR staff dropped from the roof. The sweet prize for the top three: popsicles!

Breakthrough San Francisco

Breakthrough SF hosted their annual Visitors Day, inviting the entire community to come in and see their 2024 summer program in action! Over 140 students are attending Breakthrough’s academic program this summer as part of their journey to college. The event included a presentation, classroom visits, lunch, and a conversation with students.

Presidio Community YMCA — Marina Middle School Beacon

The Presidio Y Power Scholars Academy scholars showcased all that they learned in their six week summer program, from academic classes, to enrichment clubs, and campUNITY time!

The Richmond Neighborhood Center

The Richmond Neighborhood Center brought together students from their elementary, middle, and high school programs to get their dance on and make new friends at Roosevelt Middle School.

YMCA of San Francisco — Power Scholars Graduation Ceremony

The YMCA of San Francisco’s Power Scholars Academy hosted their annual Graduation ceremony during Summer Learning Week. The Power Scholars Academy is a six-week summer program for first through eighth graders designed to address summer learning loss in math and reading and to foster physical and social-emotional growth. In addition to ensuring youth are prepared to return to school, Power Scholars go on field trips, participate in wellness activities, make new friends, and have a lot of fun. Congrats to the Power Scholars Class of 2024!
