San Francisco’s District 10 Celebrates National Summer Learning Week
Every year, summer programs all around the country participate in National Summer Learning Week, hosting events that celebrate and elevate the importance of summer programs for children, youth, and working families.
In San Francisco, non-profit, community-based organizations (CBOs) are one of the primary providers of summer programming for thousands of the City’s children and youth. These programs prevent the learning loss that can happen during the months that school is out, and they are a vital support for San Francisco’s working families, who can rely on these programs to keep their children engaged in learning, safe, and having fun throughout the summer. In 2024, every CBO that is funded by the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth, and their Families (DCYF) to provide comprehensive, all-day summer programs for children and youth in grades K-8 hosted events to celebrate Summer Learning Week.
San Francisco’s District 10, home to the Bayview, Hunters Point, Potrero Hill, Sunnydale, and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods, hosted nine Summer Learning Week events. Read on to find out how summer learning was celebrated in this part of San Francisco!
Asian Pacific American Community Center (APACC)
APACC celebrated Summer Learning Week with their annual summer carnival. Students had a great time playing carnival games, participating in art stations, making their way down bouncy slides, and eating a delicious BBQ lunch!
Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco — George Washington Carver Elementary Beacon
The Boys & Girls Club’s “Carver Village” celebrated Summer Learning Week by focusing in on the National Summer Learning Association’s Literacy & Learning theme. Students read their favorite books and gave presentations about them to their peers, and received certificates for their accomplishments over the summer!
Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco — Malcolm X Elementary School Beacon
The Boys & Girls Club’s Malcolm X Beacon students centered their Summer Learning Week event around the sun! Students participated in art projects, science projects, games, and outdoor activites with a sun theme, and of course got outside to have some fun in the sun.
FACES SF — Bayview
FACES SF celebrated Summer Learning Week with Summer of STEAM! Students and their families explored science, technology, engineering, arts, and math through multiple stations full of fun, hands-on activities.
Good Samaritan Family Resource Center — Vision Academy
Throughout Summer Learning Week, Good Sam’s Vision Academy students learned about various forms of art through dance, music, painting, and drawing. They created masks and self-portraits, and planned and created a mural after visiting the Florence Fang Community Farm for inspiration.
Good Samaritan Family Resource Center — Willie Brown Middle School Beacon
For Summer Learning Week, students at Good Sam’s Willie Brown Beacon participated in a summer showcase that brought together a wide range of activities to engage, inspire, and empower students. STEAM activities, academics, art modules, a book club, mental health and wellness activities, team building…the showcase had it all!
Potrero Hill Neighborhood House
The Potrero Hill Neighborhood House invited the entire community to celebrate Summer Learning Week at their annual S.T.E.A.M. Festival. The festival brought together activities representing all branches of science, making them accessible to children, youth, and families for the pure enjoyment of exploration.
Real Options for City Kids (R.O.C.K.)
For Summer Learning Week, R.O.C.K. students rocked a talent show! Families and friends were invited to watch R.O.C.K. students share their talents and hobbies, and give their end of summer project presentations.
Samoan Community Development Center (SCDC)
For the second year in a row, SCDC partnered with P.I.E.F.E.S.T. (Pacific Islanders Encouraging Fun, Engineering, Science & Technology) to host an epic S.T.E.A.M. focused Summer Learning Week event. While the event featured a wide array of science activities, the primary field was robotics, which will also be the focus for SCDC’s after school program in the new school year!
